There in the gift shop at the Missouri Botanical Garden, for less than $10, was the opportunity to buy my own “private Buddha.” 

If not for the moral aversion I have toward purchasing objects to be worshiped, perhaps I might have fallen for that temptation. Buddha has a certain attractiveness about him. If I didn’t have someone far superior as my master, Buddha might have been the next best candidate to fill the void.
