TALLIS’ CANON LM (“All Praise to Thee, My God, This Night”) Ash Wednesday comes, and Lord, we hear The word for which our spirits yearn; Amid this world’s distress and fear, We hear your loving call: “Return!”
“Return to me with all your heart— With fasting, weeping, mourning, too.” O God, we seek a brand new start, A new beginning here with you. You call to us--- the old, the young; You summon nations strong and weak. When we have drifted toward the wrong, You call us back, your way to seek. O God most merciful and kind, Your love is not a prize we earn; Yet in our life with you we find The joy that comes when we return. Biblical Text: Joel 2:1-2, 12-17 Tune: Thomas Tallis, Adapt. Parker’s Whole Psalter, c. 1561 Text: Copyright © 2011 by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette. All rights reserved. Email: bcgillette@comcast.net Web Site: www.carolynshymns.com Click Here to Purchase
First Sunday in Lent One Person’s Sin Changed Every Life WOODWORTH LM (“Just as I Am, Without One Plea”) One person’s sin changed every life; When Adam strayed, we too were lost. The world soon filled with death and strife And every person bears the cost. Not satisfied with what you gave, Your people sought to be like you. Those early humans disobeyed— Their story is our story, too. Then, God, in love you sent your Son, For as in Adam we did fall, So through the faithfulness of One, Salvation was your gift to all. O God, we’ve seen what death can do, And now with joy we know rebirth. In Jesus Christ, you make us new And give your life for all the earth. Biblical Texts: Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7; Romans 5:12-19 Tune: William Batchelder Bradbury,1849. Harm. The Hymnbook, 1955. Text: Copyright © 2011 by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette. All rights reserved. He said, “Teacher, God is with you! For in you we see God’s power.” Jesus turned and gave an answer filled with challenge and with love: “You can never see God’s kingdom till you’re born from heav’n above.” “Born again!” said Nicodemus. “Is that something one can do?” Jesus said, “Don’t be surprised now that you must be born anew. And it’s not by your own doing; wind and Spirit will blow free! They are not for your controlling; trust in God for what will be.” God, your Spirit still surprises like an ever-changing wind, Bringing life and love and justice where despair and death have been. May we see your Spirit working as a gift from heav’n above. Blest, may we then be a blessing to this world that you so love. For everyone drinks and is thirsty again, But God’s living water gives life without end. O God, we confess that we seek empty things; We strive after wealth and the comfort it brings. We buy things in hopes that our spirits will soar Yet still we are thirsty and left wanting more. Then just like that woman who went to the well, We hear you, O Christ, and the truth that you tell. You know who we are and you know what we’ve been; You know us and love us in spite of our sin. The gift that you give is the greatest of wealth; You give living water! You give us yourself! May we, like that woman, go back where we live And tell those we know of the life that you give. His joy was greater still than sight that was restored; He saw, when you had made him well, that you are Lord. Some leaders were distressed and said it was a sin, For it was on the day of rest that you healed him. They could not see the grace or know how much God cares; The lack of vision in that place was truly theirs. O Christ, you are the light to all who follow you; You give to us the gift of sight—a new world-view. When culture hems us in with values that destroy, Lord, help your church to see again your kingdom’s joy. Biblical Reference: John 9:1-41 Tune: Hebrew melody. Adapt. Fifth Sunday in Lent You, O Christ, are Resurrection BEACH SPRING 8.7.8.7.D (“God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending”) You, O Christ, are resurrection In a world that’s filled with pain. You reach out when we are hurting And you lift us up again. Battered women, hungry children, Lonely people, those in need Find in you a hope that’s living As they’re welcomed, loved and freed. You, O Christ, are resurrection When we’re caught up in our sin, When we grieve the road we’re traveling, When we see what might have been. You give healing and forgiveness In the place of sin and strife. Christ, we’re drawn to what you give us— Resurrection and new life. You, O Christ, are resurrection When a loved one’s memories fade, For you never will forget us— We’re the ones you came to save. Lord, we trust that you will guide us When each day brings grief and stress; Living Christ, you walk beside us Through this shadowed wilderness. You, O Christ, are resurrection When an illness takes its toll, For the promise that you give us Is that one day we’ll be whole. So we need not fear the future When the way seems hard to bear; You will gently guide and lead us To the place that you prepare. LYONS 10.10.11.11 (“O Worship the King, All Glorious Above”) Lord, what a parade! The crowd quickly grew; What noise they all made in welcoming you. “Hosanna!” they shouted. “It’s David’s own son! Hosanna! Come save us! God’s reign has begun!” They welcomed you in, a conquering king, Yet what kind of reign would you really bring? It wasn’t a war horse you rode on that day; A creature of peace carried you on your way. Did those in that crowd expect something more Than one who reached out in love to the poor? Did they think a savior with armies was best, Or did they remember: the peaceful are blessed? Lord Jesus, it’s true-- we give you glad praise, Yet living for you will challenge our ways. So may we be open and welcome your reign. Hosanna! Come save us! Renew us again!
