Webinar: Sabbath-Keeping for Church Leaders and Other Busy People

To purchase a DVD of the webinar, click here. ($39.95 plus shipping)

Pastors and church leaders are in a bind. We feel the stress of ever-escalating activities and expectations in our 24-7 world. The need for rest, renewal and Sabbath is as strong as it's ever been. The people we serve feel it too. Yet we count on them to teach the Sunday School, serve on session, sing in the choir and sort canned goods for the food bank. How can we preach, model and nurture Sabbath more faithfully amid our culture of perpetual motion?

As a result of this webinar, church leaders will:

  • understand the complex biblical and theological underpinnings of the practice of Sabbath,

  • receive tools for communicating its importance to congregations

  • gain strategies and approaches for introducing and supporting regular Sabbath-keeping in the congregations they serve

MaryAnn McKibben Dana explored this topic in depth in her recent book Sabbath in the Suburbs: A Family’s Experiment with Holy Time.

Read the Presbyterian Outlook Book review.

sabbath-in-suburbs.pngPublishers Weekly said:

Dana, a Presbyterian pastor, brings a fresh voice and energy to the familiar topic of time management as understood by people who would describe themselves as either religious or spiritual but not religious: Sabbath-keeping. She writes from a perspective that many can relate to, that of a suburban mother of three who works part-time. Bringing the gift of self-awareness and irony, Dana notes that a four-minute difference in school bus rides ought not to prompt a letter-writing campaign from anxious parents. She also brings theological awareness of the historical practice and meaning of Sabbath-keeping. Dana writes in a distinct voice about making a traditional religious practice meaningful to contemporary families.

MaryAnn McKibben Dana is pastor of Idylwood Presbyterian Church, a small and growing congregation in Falls Church, VA. She is also the author of numerous articles and essays, including three years as columnist for Presbyterians Today. She is a frequent speaker and workshop leader around issues of congregational transformation and faith development. Connect with her on her blug The Blue Room at theblueroomblog.org

HOW TO TALK ABOUT MONEY WITH THEOLOGICAL INTEGRITY"

Presbyterian Outlook Webinar Featuring Bill Enright

Jesus had much to say about money and the faithful use of possessions; in fact the Bible has more to say about this subject than love or prayer. Ironically, most pulpits are silent when it comes to money-talk except for the annual stewardship or “we-need-your-money” sermon. How different might the financial health of most American congregations be if clergy knew how to talk about money with theological integrity and pastoral sensitivity? You’ll learn about:

* Breaking the taboo of money-talk in your congregation.

* Understanding church giving from the donors’ point of view.

* Shaping a theology of faith, money and giving.

William G. Enright, Ph.D., is director of the Lake Institute on Faith and Giving at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, and former pastor of Second Presbyterian Church, Indianapolis. He has written several books, the latest being Channel Markers. Bill is a director of Lilly Endowment, Inc.

EIGHT KEYS TO MANAGING MINISTRY

Part 2, Remembering and responding:  Finding the right balance - Order DVD

Featuring, TOM EHRICH is founder of the Church Wellness Project and author of the “Multichannel Church” column in the Outlook.

Today's prospective audiences are not drawn into yesterday's churches.  But churches can "edit" the narrative of their Christian journey in order to welcome new "actors" into the next chapters of that unfolding story.
This webinar will offer strategies to help church leaders - pastors, staff members, and other congregational leaders - shape and guide the story. Tom Ehrich will discuss ways to empower your congregation to rewrite its mission narrative for today and tomorrow - while still honoring those who brought it this far.

These are practical skills for telling a new story of ministry quickly to people who are distracted and skeptical.  Help your congregation learn how to shape its own narrative expressing what it values and how they are involved with God's work in the community they serve.
For just $29.95, you will...
  • Learn how to convey your church's engaging story to a skeptical world
  • Form a plan for developing a narrative to express the church's reason for being
  • Find fresh ways to engage with the surrounding world

What’s to Become of our Church?

Trajectories of Hope

Featuring Jack Haberer, Editor of the Presbyterian Outlook

Like a ship in a harbor being rocked by the waves, so the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

is getting rocked by the double waves of NFog and 10-A. Have the mooring lines

broken asunder? Will the church be dashed upon the rocks? Will the church

founder and sink? Many people are raising these questions, as witnessed by the

gathering of the Fellowship of Presbyterians this fall, who will gather again at a

covenanting convention early in the new year. Are there better alternatives to that

which is splitting us apart? Can we Presbyterians navigate effectively through these

troubled waters?

-UNBINDING GENEROSITY

Attention Pastors, Stewardship committee members, ALL Christians!!

mendenhall

Jesus unbound Lazarus from the tomb — he called him from death to life. Our culture of plenty binds us. The attitude that ‘more is better’ governs our lives. Reclaim the Spirit's power in our lives.

Take this opportunity to explore how we can unbind our generosity – unbind the generosity of our fellow church members, too! -- and make a difference with the lives that we have been given. Our Webinar leader will be Laura Mendenhall, senior philanthropy advisor for the Texas Presbyterian Foundation; former president of Columbia Theological Seminary, and former pastor of Westminster Church, Austin, Texas.

-Fresh Ideas for Holy Week Worship Services

Featuring David Gambrell

davidGeneral Assembly Council Associate for Worship

Tap David’s treasure-trove of liturgies, theological

insights, and preaching ideas to enhance and enliven
your congregation’s worship this Holy Week.

Invite worshipers to join Jesus’ procession into Jerusalem.
Welcome them into the upper room. Walk with them through
Gethsemane and Golgotha. Quicken them by the empty
tomb. In the process, make Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday,
Good Friday, and Easter Sunday days they will remember.

-"Yes.... your church can grow!"

Featuring Graham Baird
Graham
Graham is the pastor of The Highlands Church, a new church development of
the PC(USA) that is in it's fourth year of existence, and is experiencing
growth of Biblical proportions. Graham is convinced the growth experienced
at Highlands can be replicated church-wide, by the power of the Holy Spirit,
and a few key ideas.

Trust * Perspective * Community
These are our values, the cornerstone of our commitment to our readers....
and to the Presbyterian Church.

shifts and suggest ways to find hope for our churches in the midst of it.

Carol Howard Merritt is associate pastor of Western Presbyterian Church in
Washington, D.C., author of the book Tribal Church: Ministering to the
Missing Generation, and is co-host with Bruce Reyes-Chow of the internet

-For Church Leaders

Mainline churches have suffered a long and relentless slide. But it can be
turned around and OUTLOOK columnist, Tom Ehrich, is eager to show you how.

Hint #1: It isn¹t magic. It¹s what Ehrich calls:

³The Multichannel Church²: moving beyond Sunday morning as the main
ministry. In this Webinar, the writer, pastor, and founder of the Church
Wellness Project will describe a convergence of research and experience that
led him to see that moving beyond Sunday mornings can put the church in
touch with a changing world.

Hint #2: Many are already doing Multichannel Church - you can too.

The introductory fee for Webinars - $9.95
