<description>I'm one of four evangelical Christians on an international blog who have agreed to write a response to the Ugandan government - condemning not only the bill but severing presupposed theological and scriptural bonds between heterosexuality and faithful Christian practice. When I first read the bill, I wrote to my colleagues saying how the rhetoric of the legislation mimicked some Christian right wing groups in this country, and wondered if there wasn't a connection. Well, evidently, there is. Those who support this bill in Uganda may just be getting a new mansion built for them somewhere safe and secret by funds and persons unknown, but who are heterosexual nonetheless, perhaps.

I'm relieved to hear how the President and Secretary of State are dealing with this situation by having attended that prayer breakfast. Maybe their behavior can help Americans start being civilized and decent instead of puritanical and pornographic. Since 1978, my denomination has been paralyzed by the needs of some Christian right wingers to divert our attention and energy from working for justice in the public square to invading the privacy of the bedroom, anybody's bedroom, at any time, for any reason, with impunity. If anybody might charged with obscenity, it's a Christian right that's more obsessed with sex than with alleviating hunger, disease, and the unnecessary suffering of millions of human beings. People, folks, just people. We're there for them. Remember?

Good for the President and the Secretary of State.
