Top Religious Trends for the new decade 2010-2020

1. Mainline religious denominations hit the demographic wall: 2010-2020 will witness the final passing of the builder/WW2 generation (8 million). The retirement/relocations of the Boomers (80 million) and the coming of age of Gen X (35 million) Gen Y (70 million) with profound implications for organized religion.

2, The Great down or right-sizing of the church: Close to a third of all PCUSA congregatons will either merge/union with others, or cease to exist, as they either cannot afford clergy leadership or age and other resource requirements take their toll over time. Denominational membership will bottom out at about 1.2-1.5 million members by the middle of the decade before stabilizing.
Church based ministry for clergy will become an increasingly part-time or tent-making model.

3. The death of middle governing bodies. In the smaller church the overlaping stuctures of Synods will cease to exist, and many Presbyteries will merge or consolidate functions. Power will de-evolve from the GA and the central authority will be much weaker.

4. Gay/Lesbian clergy as well as church officers will become a more accepted and common practice in the church.

5. Sometime before 2020 the PCUSA will seek merger or union with the UCC and/or Disciples of Christ (CC). - P. Gregory

"...but several U.S. dioceses withdrew from the ECUSA to form the Convocation of Anglicans in North America under the sponsorship of the Church of Nigeria."

Actually the 'Convocation of Anglicans in North America' (CANA) is one of over 29 new diocese in the emerging province the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA). Our movement the Anglican Coalition in Canada (ACiC), which is the Canadian wing of AMiA, is also one of the new dioceses in ACNA. - Rev Ed Hird
